As the human mind ages it begins to experience very subtle degenerations that are imperceptible until they reach their peak levels in the later years of life. Because the deterioration is so slight many individuals end up neglecting the strengthening exercises and activities that could mean the difference between having fully functioning mental capacity and having dementia due to old age. The brain’s associative cortex is affected by the aging process to such a degree that the senses begin to dull which is why elderly people can have difficulty hearing and seeing. Mind games have the ability to boost the associative cortex and to give the brain the protection against memory loss concerns that arrive throughout the aging process.

The brain, like any other element of the body, requires regular use to fully function. Because the mind is in control of every facet of the body there are obviously a great number of activities required in order to keep each region of the brain sharp. Some of these activities are second nature, such as breathing in and out or the heart beating and sending blood to the body through the veins. Other areas of the brain require a more concentrated effort to keep them running at full capacity. The memory falls into the latter category despite the fact that most people feel that creating and recalling memories belongs in the former category. The truth is that memory loss is an extremely common symptom of the aging process. Not only can an aging mind forget old memories but it can also have trouble forming new memories.

Participating in mind games on a regular basis can greatly increase the strength and longevity of the memory region of the brain. Medical research has shown that those that participated in regular mind games and activities over a long period of time had faster memory recall, critical thinking skills and sensory reflexes whereas those that did not participate in regular memory games and activities showed either the same levels of memory recall, critical thinking and sensory reflexes or diminished capacity to perform these tasks as when they began the study. It is highly recommended that mind games be introduced into each person’s lifestyle as early as possible for maximum brain benefits but it is never too late to start working out the mind and strengthen the abilities of the brain.
